Greywater Reuse

Greywater is defined as the wastewater from the bath, shower, laundry and hand basins.

Blackwater is defined as the wastewater from the toilets, bidets, urinals, and kitchen sinks.

In most residential premises, the greywater and blackwater streams are combined and divert to the centralised sewerage system or an on-site system such as a septic tank.

The use of greywater is regulated because of the potential for it to spread disease around your home and elsewhere. Infection can occur if untreated greywater is stored and animals or people can come into contact with it. A simple way to re-use greywater at home is to collect it in a bucket from your washing machine or shower and to use it on your garden. There are also diversion systems available.

If you wish to install a greywater treatment system, you will need to ensure it is from an accredited supply. Visit NSW Health  On-site single domestic wastewater management for more information on suppliers and systems. You will also need to complete an application, and pay the appropriate fee to install a system of sewage management to Council.
