Big Oaky Creek bridge

The aging single lane wooden bridge across Big Oaky Creek on the Upper Turon Road at Sofala is being replaced and upgraded with a dual lane concrete bridge.

The new bridge will be doubled in width at eight metres wide, and the deck span will be increasing from 10 metres to 14 metres. The bridge deck will be 300mm higher than the previous bridge with it designed to withstand a 1 in 50-year storm. The bridge has been designed so it better suits the shape of the creek, improving flow.

Additionally, the expansion to dual lane will not only improve the safety of this bridge as an access point but also will vastly improve user experience by reducing a traffic bottleneck that commonly occurred, making it better fitted to the high numbers of tourists that visit Sofala each year and streamlining usage for everyday drivers.

The bridge construction has been funded through the NSW Government's Fixing Country Bridges Program.

Anticipated project completion is September 2025.
