Visit Council’s Pop-up Cafe this Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week commences today through Sunday 27 September. In line with this year’s theme “It’s time to talk about dementia”, Council has partnered with the Bathurst Dementia Alliance to host a pop-up D Caf (Dementia Café) this Thursday at Bathurst Library.

Mayor Ben Fry noted Dementia Action Week is an annual national initiative aimed at changing the narrative around Australia’s leading cause of death.

“Dementia is a cruel and debilitating brain condition that impacts close to half a million Australians. With it recently becoming the leading cause of death in Australia, it’s important to encourage conversation about dementia warning signs and preventative measures among our peers in our everyday lives. This week, we are aiming to combat the stigma and continue to open up the conversation through our pop-up ‘D Caf’ Dementia Cafe at Bathurst Library.

"Partnering with the Bathurst Dementia Alliance, our pop-up ‘D Caf’ this Thursday is open to all and will provide an opportunity to hear from representatives of the Bathurst Dementia Alliance, meet other Bathurst locals and explore the Mind Alive Dementia Kits available in the library all while enjoying live music and free coffee.

“If you aren’t available to attend but would like to know more, a regular ‘D Caf’ event runs every Wednesday from 10am – 12noon at The Neighbourhood Centre, 96 Russell Street, Bathurst. This is a weekly social support group for people living with dementia and their carers,” said Mayor Fry.

Where: Bathurst Library forecourt

The pop-up Dementia Café will feature a range of speakers from the Bathurst Dementia Alliance including Rob Steenson, Steven Walls, and Jean Fell. The speakers will provide perspectives and information on dementia from personal, professional and social outlooks.
