On Thursday 27 August, Council will be hosting a free community workshop to promote safe online practices as part of 2026 Scams Awareness Week.
Scams Awareness Week will take place from Monday 24 – Friday 28 August with the theme "No one's just a number," reminding us that behind every scam report is a real person - a parent, friend, neighbour or colleague - whose money, time or trust has been stolen.
Mayor Cr Robert Taylor reflected on the importance of Scams Awareness Week, highlighting the steps we can all take to protect our safety online.
"Every year, scams are costing Australians billions of dollars with scammers finding new ways to gain trust and take personal information and money. Scams Awareness Week is a chance for all of us to talk more openly about scams and how to stay safe.
"As part of this awareness week, Council is hosting a Free Community Workshop from 11am until 12noon next Thursday 27 August at Bathurst Library. Attendees will learn about staying scam aware, looking out for red flags and what to do if you suspect you've been scammed. This workshop will be facilitated by Lisa Coates from the Centre for Law & Justice at CSU alongside Council staff members.
"Additionally, to further inform the public about the prevalence of scams, Lisa Coates, Lecturer in Law at CSU will join 2MCE Radio’s Seymour Hour this Wednesday 19 August at 11am, followed by Inspector Nick Glover from Chifley Police District at 11:15am, each discussing what to keep a look out for online. Plus, Jayde Richmond, the ACCC's National Anti-Scam Centre General Manager will be joining 2BS' Live & Local on Tuesday 25 August, discussing simple measures we can all take to protect our safety,” said Mayor Taylor.
