Visitors were snapping selfies at a rapid rate at this year’s Museum Selfie Day at Bathurst’s museums.

For the first time the day covered seven cultural facilities - the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, Bathurst Rail Museum, Chifley Home and Education Centre, National Motor Racing Museum, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Bathurst District Historical Society and Miss Traill’s House and Garden.

Deputy Mayor Cr Ben Fry the statistics for the day were fantastic. Across the day we had almost 2,800 visitors to the seven facilities.”

“Visitation across Council’s four museums was up more than 22 percent on last year’s Selfie Day.

“The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum had a 33.6 percent increase on last year; while visitation to Chifley Home was up more than 52 percent.  Miss Traill’s House and Garden joined the promotion for the first time this year and were pleased with the number of visitors on the day, but have also seen a spin-off benefit.”

“Museum Selfie Day is an opportunity for our community and visitors to explore our cultural facilities.  On the day more than 80 percent of those taking advantage of the free entry were from the Bathurst LGA, which shows the community is interested in attending these facilities.

“Some people couldn’t attend on museums selfie day, so I'm glad to say that Council is working on another opportunity that would allow residents to attend for free on a day of their choosing.”

“This helps raise awareness in the community of the diversity and quality of our museums and often generates repeat visits and recommendations for visiting family and friends to visit one or more of the facilities,” Cr Fry said.

The day in numbers:

Across all seven museums:

  • 74.2% of those attending came with their family
  • 81.6% were from Bathurst
  • 80.6% had not attended Selfie Day before
  • 79.6% were there for Selfie Day
