Over the weekend, l had the privilege of attending the 150th Anniversary of the first rail train arrival at our iconic Bathurst Railway Station. Bathurst has always been a thriving region, and the introduction of the railway had a profound impact on our city. Once built, our station swiftly became the main gateway for passengers and freight coming and going from Bathurst, with less travel time and transport difficulties, it was a viable option for visitors to explore the region. 150 years later, Bathurst Railway Station stands strong and continues to function every single day, connecting residents and visitors from the Central West with greater NSW. It was terrific to celebrate such a milestone with previous staff, railway family and residents, all of whom continue to support and contribute to our great city of Bathurst. It was terrific as well to have the attendance of The Hon. Jenny Aitchison MP. Minister for Regional Transport and Minister for Roads and other dignitaries on the day. Before the celebrations, I had the chance to speak with Minister Aitchison, alongside our Deputy Mayor and General Manager, about the disruption on the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. In our meeting we stressed that the Central West community, our freight drivers and local businesses need confidence that the immediate response will move faster and keep the corridor functioning while the current issues are worked through. There is still no definitive timeline, which I know is frustrating, but we are having weekly taskforce meetings and will keep the community updated when we hear anything of value.

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of officially unveiling The Story of Bathurst, a fascinating collection of signage throughout the CBD telling the intricate history of our region. Well done and a huge thank you to Fran White of Bathurst & District Branch, National Trust of Australia - NSW and Sandy Bathgate of Bathurst Heritage Matters for putting in years of research and leading the immense compilation and design work that have culminated in this terrific work which also serves as a wonderful tribute to the late Bathurst historian, Dr Robin McLachlan. Supported by Council’s Heritage Assistance Fund small grants program, this is a tremendous project bringing our region’s history to the surface in a meaningful and engaging way. Well done to all involved.

In other news, Officeworks Bathurst has officially moved! On Wednesday, I joined our local member, Paul Toole, at the grand re-opening of their new store out at Kelso Gateway. It is a wonderful addition to the new precinct and is one of the biggest stores in the Central West! When businesses like this choose to invest in our region, they’re opening opportunities that go beyond their commercial offerings. Business investment importantly brings jobs, strengthens our local economy, and encourages other businesses to see the potential that exists here. It sends a clear message that our growing community is most certainly worth backing. Best of luck to everyone in the team and congratulations.
