Bathurst Regional Council has registered with DV Safe Phone as an Authorised Phone Drop Location, allowing old mobile phones to be repurposed and provide safety for those in need.

DV Safe Phone is an Australian charity that collects old mobile phones to help provide critical resources and support to victims of domestic and family violence, amplifying their voices and empowering them to seek help.

Mayor Cr Robert Taylor noted the importance of this program, after Council considered a recent Notion of Motion from Cr Elaine West, and encouraged the community to donate their unused, working mobile phones through Council’s two collection boxes.

“The DV Safe Phone program is a terrific and crucial initiative. They collect, refurbish and gift mobile phones to victims of domestic violence through registered charities and authorities. This provides victims of abuse with a safe and secure device through which they can contact emergency and support services.

“Council is proud to be an Authorised Phone Drop Location for this charity, with two collection boxes now available for use on the ground floor of the Civic Centre and at Bathurst Library.

“I’m sure there were many new phones unwrapped at Christmas last month, so, if you can, I please encourage you to deactivate your old phone and donate it when you are next in town. Whether you can help by raising awareness or directly donating your old phone, every little bit makes a positive impact and has the power to support a life.

“All decommissioned Council-owned mobile phones will also be donated on an ongoing basis to DV Safe Phone, as a means for Council to further our support for this pressing cause,” said Mayor Taylor.

Outside of Council, additional DV Safe Phone collection boxes are currently located across the Bathurst Region at Bathurst Police Station, Housing Plus and Bathurst Motor Group.
