Bathurst is located on the Macquarie River 207 km west of Sydney via the Great Western Highway and 670 m above sea-level.
Bathurst Regional Council includes all the area formerly included in the Bathurst City Council, most of Evans Shire and a small amount of land formerly included in Oberon Shire, following a council amalgamation in 2004.
Bathurst is Australia’s oldest inland settlement and has many fine historic buildings, and is one of Australia’s fastest growing regional centres.
The raising of sheep, cattle and horses, which began with the earliest European occupation of the land, is still practised on large land holdings near the city.
However, education is now the largest single industry. Other contributions to the local economy are made by fruit and vegetable production, a vegetable cannery, a fish processing plant, a pet food processing plant, government departments and community services.
