Harmony Day PDF Print E-mail

Harmony Day, which began in 1999, occurs in March each year and celebrates Australia's success as a diverse society united by a common set of values. Harmony Day provides an opportunity for us to celebrate our successes as a culturally diverse society and re-commit ourselves to harmony and mutual respect.

Since 1945, more than six million people have settled in Australia and in 60 years of post-war migration Australia 's population has jumped from 6 million to approximately 22 million.

Between us, we now speak more than 200 languages, including 45 Indigenous languages. Our most commonly spoken languages are English, Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin.

International Harmony Day, which takes place on 21 March, provides an opportunity for the community to celebrate our culturally diverse society. Bathurst Regional Council works with the Culturally Diverse Working Group to design events which promote harmony and mutual respect in Bathurst.

Harmony Day 2012 will be celebrated on Sunday, 18 March 2012 with a community walk, picnic and family games in Peace Park, William Street, Bathurst from 11am.  Everyone is welcome - so bring your picnic, walking shoes...
